Dempsey Rules at Trois-Rivieres
Added: 19th August 2008
TROIS-RIVIÈRES, Que., Canada, Aug. 17 - Trois-Rivières is the "National
Poetry Capital of Quebec," and Andersen Racing's Peter Dempsey was poetry in motion Sunday as he led every lap to win Round 7 of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear on that town's 1.506-mile, 10-turn street course.
It's not known if Mayor Yves Lévesque has any plans to give Dempsey the keys
to the city, but the 22-year-old from Ashbourne, County Meath, Ireland had
things firmly locked up here this weekend. In addition to dominating Sunday's
40-lap race, he set a new track record in winning the pole on Saturday with his No. 21, which is sponsored by LotusWorks, Center Jewellers.ie, Quayside.ie, Motorsport Ireland, Allied Interior Products and Trojan Complete IT Solutions.
He also set the fastest lap of Sunday's race with a 1:02.363 for an average
speed of 87.802 miles per hour.
Dempsey had a 1.465-second advantage over John Edwards at the checkered flag
on Sunday. Alex Ardoin and Joel Miller came across the line next.
Dempsey is now fourth in the overall point standings and with the drops considered Dempsey is fifth. With the drops only seven points separate the drivers holding positions two through six with five races remaining.
"We had some good results early in the season with a podium and a couple of top-5s, but we hit a bad patch in both races at Portland," said Dempsey. "It was a fairly straight forward race from my perspective; I was able to pull out a little bit of a gap on John and just tried to maintain that until the end. The team and I are working very well together right now and the car is a
pleasure to drive. I'm happy to be scoring these victories for my team, my sponsors and all my supporters back in Ireland. Hopefully we can go on to Mosport next weekend, have a similar result and get back into the championship battle."
Andersen Racing leads the team standings with 222 points to JDC Motorsports'
166.
The action now moves to Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario
next Saturday, Aug. 23. A doubleheader at the brand-new New Jersey
Motorsports Park Sept. 13-14, a race at Road Atlanta Oct. 3 and the season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Oct. 18 round out the 2008 schedule.
Sunday's race is scheduled to be broadcast on SPEED at noon Eastern on
Saturday, Aug. 30. The latest TV schedules are posted on starmazda.com and
speedtv.com.
